Sites of the Quarter - Spring 2003

Every so often we'll feature two transit related sites as well as an occasional non-transit site that we think would be interesting to our visitors to check out.  One site will be the official site of an agency and the others will be a fan and/or special sites.  This quarter's entries are:

  • Official Transit Site of the Quarter - Wheels Online at www.wheelsbus.com

Wheels Online provides information about the Wheels transit system in the Tri-Valley area of California.  Wheels a service of the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (LAVTA) and provides public transportation for the communities of Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton, California. Services LAVTA provides are Fixed Route, DART(Direct Access Responsive Transit), Paratransit Service and the Prime Time Commuter Express to the Silicon Valley and Walnut Creek areas.  Wheels Online has been on the web providing information about Wheels since late 1997 on free hosts such as Tripod and XOOM as an un-official site and in early 1999 it moved to it's own domain at www.lavta.org and later on www.wheelsbus.com.
  • Fan Site of the Quarter - The Bus Stops Here at www.the-bus-stops-here.org

The "Bus Stops Here" is an excellent website that is dedicated to one of the lowliest and most forgotten aspects in use by public transit, the Bus Stop.  If there were no bus stops, we would have a big mess on our hands as you wouldn't be able to get off the bus until it returns to the bus garage, which creates another mess...the bus facility full of passengers stranded there!  How do we solve that problem?  Doing one of 2 things:  One is putting them to work there as fueler and washers, cleaning and probing the coaches or the other, which is installing bus stops along the routes, therefore passengers can get off the bus and not crowd the bus garage!  So that's why the bus stop exists.  Check out the site...the welcome page has a neat photo of an excellent dream bus stop! :)  This site is so neat, it gets another quarter!

  • Special Site of the Quarter - Jane Ellen Official Website at www.janeellen.com

Although this site is not related to the transit industry, I thought I feature non-transits here too!  Our first Special Site of the Quarter is the Jane Ellen Official Website.  Jane is a free-lance composer residing in the American Southwest.  Within her website, she shares many things, such as academic and professional credits.  But, there's more....She also features ever-changing sections including thoughts on life as an artist, music-related quotations and poems, essays reflecting her fascination with various aspects of history, and more.  She also hunts out websites and if they "blow her out of the water," she'll award them the JEOW Webdesign Excellence Award.  This site, KimmiKat.com and the Wheels homepage have recently received the award!  Here's a bonus, she may may even have a surprise or two for you.  Check it out!
